Quasi-Periodic Crystals—The Long Road from Discovery to Acceptance*

چکیده

Three surprising discoveries on the nature of matter and its properties were published in the mid-1980s. All these discoveries led to Nobel prizes. The first discovery was in 1985, when fullerenes were discovered by Robert F. Curl Jr, Sir Harold W. Kroto, and Richard E. Smalley. Fullerenes, also known as buckyballs, are spherical molecules composed of carbon atoms. The discovery of fullerenes launched the field of nano-materials, one of the fastestgrowing fields in chemistry today. In 1996, 11 years after the publication of the discovery, the three researchers were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry. No controversy surrounded this discovery.

The Rebirth of Crystallography

Exactly 20 years have passed since the surprising discovery of the first quasicrystal by Shechtman [1]. Centuries of prior research in crystallography had led to the development of a beautiful and well-established science of crystals [2]. Modern crystallography was born in the 17 th century thanks to the brilliant idea – – attributed to such great scientists as Kepler and Hooke– –that the obser...

Finite-Difference Time-Domain Simulation of Light Propagation in 2D Periodic and Quasi-Periodic Photonic Structures

Ultra-short pulse is a promising technology for achieving ultra-high data rate transmission which is required to follow the increased demand of data transport over an optical communication system. Therefore, the propagation of such type of pulses and the effects that it may suffer during its transmission through an optical waveguide has received a great deal of attention in the recent years. We...

Periodic, quasi-periodic, and random quadratic nonlinear photonic crystals

Quadratic nonlinear photonic crystals are materials in which the second order susceptibility is spatially modulated while the linear susceptibility remains constant. These structures are significantly different than the more common photonic crystals, in which the linear susceptibility is modulated. Nonlinear processes in nonlinear photonic crystals are governed by the phase matching requirement...

The global long-range order of quasi-periodic patterns in Islamic architecture.

Three decades after their discovery, the unique long-range structure of quasicrystals still poses a perplexing puzzle. The fact that some ancient Islamic patterns share similar quasi-periodic symmetries has prompted several scientists to investigate their underlying geometry and construction methods. However, available structural models depend heavily on local rules and hence they were unable t...

Wull Shape for Non{periodic Arrangements

We deene an analogue of the Gibbs{Curie energy for quasi{crystals. We show that there exists a Wull{type shape optimizing this energy, which is always a convex polytope. This way we can model the triacontahedron and the dodecahedron as shapes of quasi{crystals, according to reality. We also provide a shorter proof for the well{known formula for the number of points of a non{periodic set in a la...
